NIST provides essential strategies to protect Operational Technology (OT) and critical infrastructure from evolving cyber threats.
The Rising Threat to Operational Technology. Operational Technology (OT) manages the physical processes in critical infrastructure, such as power grids and water systems. Recent cyber incidents have underscored that these systems are no longer isolated. As they become increasingly interconnected with IT networks, they face a growing barrage of threats. NIST's new guidance aims to bridge the gap between traditional IT security and the unique requirements of OT systems. ## Protecting Building Automation Systems. Building Automation and Control Systems (BACS) are often overlooked entry points for hackers. These systems control everything from HVAC to access control. NIST recommends a layered defense strategy. This includes isolating BACS networks, implementing strict access controls, and continuously monitoring for anomalous behavior. ## Practical Recommendations for Organizations. 1. Segment your OT networks from the corporate IT environment. 2. Conduct regular risk assessments specifically for control systems. 3. Ensure that vendor-provided hardware has all default passwords changed immediately upon installation.
